Zine 03

Summers End by David Peter Harris

What is a zine?

A zine is usually a non – commercial, non professional publication, kind of like a magazine but with a twist. The main difference between a magazine and a zine is that zines are not out there to make a profit but, rather, to add other, often unheard voices into the mix. Zines are usually made out of interest and passion and are often self-published by the photographer/writer/artist/creator.

The concept for this zine came from a visit to my partners hometown on the Adriatic coast of Italy, and being surprised to find that her hometown had multiple similarities to the town I grew up in. Most glaringly the fact both towns were major holiday destinations for people from landlocked cities and towns, coupled with architecture that seemed to have had its heyday in the 80’s and 90’s.

The following year I took a trip to my former hometown on the last weekend of summer to try find some of what I had felt in Italy.

The zine idea came as an after thought as I was holding onto all the scans and felt like they needed a nice home.

I mostly shoot with a small rangefinder, mostly 35mm, I spend my days working on photo shoots as a Lighting Assistant, surfing in the frosty Atlantic Ocean, or walking in the mountains with Clotilde and our dog Barbara.
